The artist and scientist presents visual pieces alongside participatory events focused on environmental themes such as climate change, shifting migratory patterns, resource consumption, and habitat alteration.

THE CALL FOR ARTISTS AND DESIGNERS

Earth Day Experience - Exhibition in New York City + Awarding $15,000!

EcoArt Project invites artists and designers to submit art in any medium: painting, drawing, print, sculpture, ceramics, textile, installation, mixed media, film, digital, performance, etc. Applications (art portfolio and artist bio) will be reviewed for exhibition consideration.

Earth Day Experience is an interdisciplinary exhibition to celebrate Earth Day 2021, and create some much-needed artistic vibrancy in New York City. Following a juried review of the applications, EcoArt Project will announce the five artists/designers that will be invited to create an impactful experience and be awarded a total of $15,000 -$3,000 each. The selection of the five winners is based on the evaluation of artist resumes and portfolios. We are not requesting new proposals at this stage. These five artists/designers will be invited to produce a new piece for the Earth Day Experience exhibition that will be installed this spring from April 6 to April 28. Artists may also choose to exhibit existing work if it fits within the environmental theme of the exhibition and the work has not been previously exhibited.

It is EcoArt Project’s goal to showcase artworks able to effectively convey the urgency of our environmental crisis, to address climate change, and envision sustainable pathways. We seek to collaborate with artists who can engage in creative exchanges with impactful messaging. During these difficult times, we also hope to highlight how so many artists and designers are pointing the way onward and upward.

The exhibition venue is a pop-up space (7 East 14th Street). This empty storefront just off Union Square is kindly provided by our partner organization ChaShaMa. The exhibition will remain open to the public daily with all necessary COVID-19 protocols in place.

Application deadline is February 28, 2021. There is no application fee. See below for the jury panel.

On or around March 6, the five selected artists will be notified of decisions and will receive further information regarding the art commission for this exhibition. Artists must be able to deliver their work to the exhibition venue on or around April 6. EcoArt Project will not be responsible for transportation and insurance. This call is open to everyone around the world. If you are a winner of this competition, you must be able to be in New York City during April 2021. EcoArt Project will not provide stipends for travel, food, or accommodations. We expect the selected artists to create live engagement in the exhibition venue during the time of the exhibition—April 7–27—in order to offer an immersive experience to the public. We will adopt all Covid-19 protocols to ensure safety for all. A rotating calendar for in-person participation (such as sessions dedicated to painting, performance, photography, sculpture, and acting) will be created with our curatorial team to offer you space to create new artwork in the venue and spotlight your talents.

Artists may opt to sell their work during the exhibition period. EcoArt Project will coordinate in-person and online sales as well as a final auction at the conclusion of the exhibition. The artist will receive 40% of the sales price and the remaining proceeds will be used by EcoArt Project for its programming.

A designated “studio space” for creating new artwork will be set up at the entrance to the show to be used by the five selected artists during the time of the exhibition on an alternating calendar. Visible through the window, the concept is to invite onlookers to engage with the creative process. This work space may also function as a stage for selected live performances.

In addition to the art installation, a select number of artists will have the opportunity to be featured in Earth Day 2021 virtual events put together by Earth Day Initiative, a New York-based nonprofit organization with the mission of bringing the spirit of the first Earth Day into the 21st Century. Earth Day Initiative’s entirely virtual events will feature a livestream stage on April 18 and an interactive virtual exhibitor fair on April 19. The virtual events offer an opportunity to continue the climate conversation in this pivotal year and to have artists speak to their own environmental inspiration and why art is important in the push for real environmental action.

The exhibition Earth Day Experience is part of REbound-NYC—a program incubated by EcoArt Project to repurpose empty storefronts as cultural pop-ups throughout 2021. We aim to utilize the arts to reinvigorate communities in neighborhoods throughout the city.

EcoArt Project establishes collaborations with artists and creative minds to facilitate opportunities in the environment/climate change space. This year’s Earth Day Experience will be EcoArt Project’s 11th exhibition. All entries to this call will be published on our online EcoArt Showcase, our online ongoing engagement to promote and document a green art movement. Over the past ten years of our activity, we have published over 1,300 artists around the globe. This is a digital forum with global viewership, including world-leading art institutions, brands, publications, creative agencies, commercial galleries, talent agencies, collectors, curators, design studios, architecture firms, writers, and more. We have also organized salon mixers with artists and scientists, awarded prizes, and funded residency programs with international cultural exchanges.

We very much look forward to submissions from artists and designers to take advantage of this opportunity.

We recommend that you upload at least five images or five links to your videos and insert an up-to-date "Artist Bio/Resume” in your Profile page to impress the jurors. Although not required, we encourage you to submit artworks on our online Showcase.

EcoArt Project reserves the right to modify this initiative, for example but not limited to modifying this call, cancelling it at any time, changing exhibition location or dates, or making other necessary adjustments to the project due to any unforeseen events.
